Growing up my family always had Beagles thanks to my Uncle Ron. Then one day my father said he wanted a German Shorthaired Pointer. This is where it all started.
Fast forward to my "grown up" life! I got my first GSP in 1994. I found an ad in the local paper. I was living in Louisville, KY at the time. Welcome Lucy into my life! I learned so much from her! First was to not buy from a backyard breeder! Second was to find a breeder that does health tests. You see, Lucy had hip dysplasia so bad that she could barely walk. It is because of her that I will never breed without health testing!
In 2001 and now living in Michigan, my husband Rob came home from work and asked if I wanted to go to a dog show. DUH! He already knew my answer! He took the family to the show in Novi. I was hooked! I met Neil and Louise Ritter at the show. They let me meet their dogs and gave me the basics about showing. Heck! I even got to help hold their dogs! The following weekend I had my first show dog! Welcome "Misty Lu" Heidabrandt's It's A Misty Lu! I had such big plans for her!
I started taking conformation classes right away. Then it was time for her first show. Louise took her in and won her class! My first mentor Kim Geyer took her back in for winners and won the point! Wow! this is easy I thought! Boy did I have a lot to learn! I tried showing her myself but never earned any points. Thank goodness I met Sue Branch who not only finished her but won a Best Of Breed over Specials along the way! I learned the hard way that my beautiful Misty was not perfect!
I learned a lot with Misty by my side. She easily earned her CGC. She was trained in agility, obedience, rally and to hunt. I did not title her due to personal reasons. My mistake. It came time for me to breed her. I needed to, well you know, or get off the pot. I spent many hours researching the breed, looking through pedigrees, lots of pictures, history of kennels and of dogs. Thanks to a recommendation by Kelly Kastros, I finally settled on a stud dog but the breeding didn't take.
Billie Jo Weeks entered my life early on in the show ring. She had a litter of puppies and asked if I wanted one. Welcome "Fusion" Quantum's Makin' A Connection into my life. My beautiful, almost solid liver girl. I was convinced I was going to show her on my own. I actually earned her first few points and even a Best Puppy In Show. Sue Branch, Jen Miller and Derek Beatty saved Fusion from my novice handling skills! Jen also took Fusion in and earned her JH. I got her CGC.
Back to the whole breeding thing. Misty came back into season. This time the breeding to "Turner" AM/CAN CH Kan Point Turn Back Time MH worked. Hotwired GSPS came to life as the puppies were born on November 27, 2005. My Legacy was born. I just didn't know it yet! I kept 2 of the 7 puppies and the rest went to wonderful families! More classes, fun matches and lots of training lead us to our first show. "Diesel" Hotwired's Jager He's DaBomb wins Best in Sweepstakes and his sister "Chaser" Hotwired's Shot of Respect wins Best of Opposite Sex at the GSPC of MI Specialty. At the show, Diesel wins Best of Winners and a 5 point major! The next day, the same! another 5 point major! The following day he does it again! Another 5 point major another best of winners! That made him the youngest GSP to earn his CH at 6 months at 2 days! What a ride I went on with Diesel! My first trip to GSPCA National Specialty, New York City and the Westminster KC show, Florida and the Eukanuba Classic. He has finished # 16 and # 10. He finished in the top 10 UKC and won Best Of The TopTen. He has won Best Of Breed at the Sporting Dog Specialty in New Jersery. He finished his career as Multiple BISS, Multiple Group Winning, Multiple Group Placing, Record Holding GCH UKC/CAN CH Hotwired's Jager He's Da Bomb ROM. This litter also produced "Thea" Hotwired's Amaretto Chill who is major pointed and " Justice" Hotwired's Attitude Adjustment who is a sporting group placer as well as a puppy group winner.
My next litter with Misty was to the handsome " Che' " CH Vere Dominguez. I kept two boys of six. i ended up finally keeping "Fred" CH Hotwired' Drop Dead Fred. I Placed " Tussel" GCHB Hotwired's Vision Quest JH with my first junior Matthew Hanks. Fred finished quickly with Derek Beatty and Sue Branch on the end of his lead. Tussel was not far behind shown by Kathy Hamaker and Matt. Tussel and Matt became a juniors team that was tough to beat! Fred joined forces first with Allison Hanks as her juniors dog then with my daughter Mekenzie becoming her juniors dog.
Misty and Lucy
On to my second generation now that Chaser was finished! Again to the research. "Polo" CH Panamint's Fields Of Glory JH was chosen. The litter produced four puppies with me keeping two. " Aurora" CH Hotwired's Chasin' The Stars and "Paris" Hotwired's Chasin' The Dream CGC. Again Sue Branch was on the end of the end of the lead finishing Aurora in style by going Best of Breed over Specials and a Sporting Group 4. Jacob got involved and got a CGC on Paris!
While Chaser was being bred, I also bred Diesel to Fusion. Yes I questioned my sanity having two litters at once! I consider a successful litter as one that places the puppies with amazing families. i have been blessed! "Spark" GCH Hotwired's Drivin' Me Crazy is a product of this litter.
Along the way Diesel has been bred to some lovely bitches. He has produced CH, GCH, MH, and FDJ. Most notable is "Dawson" AM/CAN CH LegacyK Hotwired Analyze This MH who won the 2009 GSPCA National Best in Futurity. I always look forward to his upcoming progeny.
Onto Chaser's second and final litter She was bred to "Brodie" Multiple CAN BIS AM/CAN GCH LegacyK Blue Sunday. #1 GSP in Canada in 2013. The litter produced five of which I kept three. "Melody" CH Hotwired's All Fired Up who was shown by me, Mekenzie, Derek Beatty and Allison Hanks. "Tenor" GCH Hotwired's Real Life Fairytail who was shown by Matthew Hanks, Mekenzie, Jen Miller and Deanna Rotkowski. And "Coda" GCHB Hotwired's Heartbreaker for AlaJazz who was shown by Jen Miller, Sue Branch and Mekenzie. Coda is now teamed up with Mekenzie in the juniors ring! I am still having fun with this litter! Since Coda has been bred, Tenor is now Mekenzie's junior's dog.
That is the history of Hotwired GSPS and me. As I stated, I consider a successful litter based on the great families I get, not by the number of titles they achieve! I enjoy watching my dogs being handled by my juniors and love the bonds they have formed. I may not have top winning show dogs but I am happy with the wins I have and I am happier that the dogs I have keep my feet warm at night and make me laugh during the day. I am blessed to have gained many friends in our breed and others during my ride. I would not have what I do without my family (Rob, Jacob, Mekenzie and my dad) handlers and friends Sue Branch, Jen Miller, Derek Beatty, Allison and Matthew Hanks, Bernice Wiles, Kim Geyer, Nancibeth Clements and Deanna Rotkowski. Without these people I wouldn't be.
Chaser in her favorite spot, on my lap!
